Interview With 'The Chapter'

Firstly, introduce yourselves and tell us a little bit about the band and how you came to be?

Hello. Thank you for letting us be part of your webzine.

The band started in early 2004 in the suburbs of Lisbon. The band was formed by Gonçalo Carvalho (Vocals), João Gomes (Guitar), Pedro almeida (Guitar), Pedro Antunes (Drums) and Vasco Macau (Bass)

After many gigs, we made our first EP in 2006, entitled “Into The Abyss”. We started working on new tracks, but we had some setbacks that made the band stop.

We retake in 2015 with Pedro Rodrigues on vocals and me (Eurico Mealha) on the bass. We did a few gigs, but we were mostly working on the new album “Angels And Demons”, which was released in late 2017.

What were you all up too prior to the band, was this always the chosen path or did you have other dreams and aspirations?

Well, I think we all had dreams of having an interesting musical project. We all began to learn music and to compose music when we were young.

But at one point our influences were all converging on our band The Chapter. We hope to continue making gigs in our country and abroad if possible and to compose new tracks even more powerful to be able to make a second album.

Tell us about your latest album and why our readers should check it out.

Our initial idea was not even to make an album. We had in mind an EP with 4 tracks.

It all came with the invitation to participate in a clip for a portuguese horror film festival (Motel-X). We started looking for studios to record a quality track to get into that clip. At that time came the name of Bruno Mendes and Attic Home Studio.

We recorded the song “Angels And Demons” and we were surprised by the quality and power that the music transmitted. We later recorded 3 more tracks and we felt we could record another 1 or 2 tracks.

We ended up recording another 4 and we got an album of 8 songs. Great. Overall, we felt that the determination and commitment we had in producing the album resulted in a very successful album.

The album has a mix of Death and Doom Metal with many gothic influences. I advise you to listen.

Have you ever come face to face with someone within the music scene who has left you awestruck and why?

We have not participated in any festivals with big bands yet. I think that sooner or later we will attend a major event and be able to meet important bands face to face.

Either way, this is not our goal or a priority. We want to attend events and play our songs, but we do not want to rush ourselves and do things badly.

If we were to head out to one of your live shows what can ourselves and others expect?

Our concerts are made with the same dynamism as the album “Angels And Demons”. We want to show the public a mix of feelings between good and evil with heavy riffs and melodies.

We think this mix, results in a very strong live match.

If you had one artist/band that you could go on tour with tomorrow who would it be and why?

I can say that the band has influences of Opeth, Gojira, Paradise Lost, Katatonia, but we can also say that there are bands like Dark Tranquility, Swallow the Sun, Alcest, Nevermore and Cradle of Fifth who also contributed.

So if we had to choose a band, maybe Paradise Lost was the most appropriate, because we have a lot of admiration for its musicality and quality.

You can spend an hour with a musical icon living or dead, who would you pick, why and what would you speak about?

Choosing an artist among so many who are divine musicians is an almost impossible task. Because everyone in the band has very different musical tastes.

But for me (Eurico) who would I choose if I have 1 hour to speak? Well, I’d rather spend an hour playing a studio, for example, with the SepticFlesh’s drummer Krimh. But if it was a casual conversation, I’d like it to be with Arch Enemy’s guitarist Michael Amott. I would address many topics, but what fascinates me most is his melodic approach at heavy rhythms.

Big hug from The Chapter and thank you very much for the support.
