Interview With 'Perimeter'

January 8, 2018

Firstly, introduce yourself/yourselves and tell us a little bit about the band and how you came to be?

We are an Alternative Metalcore band from Smithtown, New York, officially founded in 2014. Our founding members, Shane (lead guitar), Devin (bass), and Frank (drums), met in middle school and formed “The Bottom Line,” the group’s first music project, in 2010. They originally founded the band upon their mutual love of Metal music, primarily influenced by the bands Avenged Sevenfold and Disturbed.

Marc joined the group in 2014 after responding to a Facebook post regarding our singer auditions. This is when we officially founded “Perimeter.” In 2016, we decided to add an additional member as a permanent rhythm guitarist, which was when Justin, whom Shane knew in high school, joined our band that June. He blew us away at his audition with his technical ability, scream vocals, and natural chemistry with our lead guitar player.

Our mission as a band is to expand the boundaries of Metal music and incorporate influences from various corners of the industry; from Disturbed and Of Mice & Men, to Periphery and August Burns Red, to Ed Sheeran and A Day To Remember. We utilize many elements and techniques from different genres to diversify our writing and create music that connects with people on a deeper level.

What were you all up too prior to the band, was this always the chosen path or did you have other dreams and aspirations?

Many of our band members have been together since 2010: jamming, writing music, and performing covers at a few local shows before officially founding Perimeter in 2014. Outside of the band, we all attend school at various colleges and universities around the country studying majors such as business, math, engineering, and computer science. Music is our chosen path as a group, but we have found it to be beneficial to gain a background in these other areas, as they have all been very applicable in our journey through the industry so far.

Tell us about your latest EP and why our readers should check it out.

This past year we have been focusing on writing and recording tracks for our debut EP titled “What Lies Ahead.” It is a 5-song album that opens with an intro track. We worked with The Sin Circle Records on Long Island to record and produce all of the tracks for our new album. This record features synth-like Djent style guitar tracks, powerful drum rhythms, groovy Metal bass riffs, and a strong balance between clean, Pop-style vocals and scream vocals. As a band, we are all very proud of the project and the vast array of musical styles that influenced its creation.

Have you ever come face to face with someone within the music scene who has left you awestruck and why?

In the summer of 2017, we had the opportunity to work with Etienne Sin of The Sin Circle Records. He served as the producer for our new EP, “What Lies Ahead.” He has a lot of experience, both as a songwriter and as a producer, and he became a huge asset for us throughout recording. We were highly impressed with his speed and efficiency in operating recording software, making the process very smooth and quick. He also provided us with great input, which helped us in many creative writing aspects for this album.

If we were to head out to one of your live shows what can ourselves and others expect?

We have invested a lot of time and money into making live Perimeter shows an unforgettable experience for our fans. We perform a diverse set list, featuring original songs that range from Metalcore, to Punk, to Alternative, as well as some covers by our favorite bands. We hang banners with our logo and album artwork up on the stage to promote our new music. We also try to excite the crowd by jumping on and off of LED light boxes to highlight the intense, impactful moments of the show. People that attend our concerts should expect to be thoroughly entertained and also to get involved, as we constantly insight our audiences to jump, sing, and of course open up the circle pits!

If you had one artist/band that you could go on tour with tomorrow who would it be and why?

We have a lot of respect for August Burns Red’s technical virtuosity and overall sound cohesiveness, so we would love to tour with them. Not only do they very clearly understand what it is that they are doing musically, but they also present themselves in a way that is entertaining yet simultaneously personable and engaging. We could almost guarantee that we would learn a lot from them if we were given the opportunity to tour together. We also believe that our bands would collectively put on very exciting shows for the fans!

You can spend an hour with a musical icon living or dead, who would you pick, why and what would you speak about?

We would definitely want to speak with Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, the late drummer of Avenged Sevenfold. We find that despite his obviously incredible drumming ability, the most interesting thing about him was his highly unorthodox songwriting style, and we seek to understand that more clearly. We ultimately want to develop a mastery of song composition that is unique, while effectively conveying our message(s). The Rev also seemed like an overall genuine guy with a lot of personality, and we think that we all would very much enjoy an opportunity to hang out with him even for just one hour.

And finally and most importantly is Die Hard a Christmas Movie?

Hell yeah it's a Christmas movie! It's the quintessential thing to watch because unlike all of the laid back comedies, or romantic comedies (eww), Die Hard is an action thriller that's intense and entertaining! There are so many guns and constant action, so it feels like you're playing Call of Duty in the form of a movie, especially with the special effects of blood and gore. But in the end, the story revolves around a guy that is just trying to make it home for the holidays, following the stereotypical pattern of classic American Christmas movies.
