Interview With 'NonserviaM'

Firstly, introduce yourselves and tell us a little bit about the band and how you came to be?

NONSERVIAM is a Penang-based Melodic Death Metal collective formed in the mid of 2009. The initial idea was (just) to be a studio project, before protruding ideas of taking the musical compositions to the live setting materialized in 2010. That was when Leon gathered musicians to complete the line-up. We have since released an MCD (“Archetype Obscure”, 2016), a full-length album (“A Spectral Ascension”, 2014), and our debut EP (“Ordinance Of Reason”, (2012). We are signed with Salt Lake City, USA’s Extreme Metal label Slaughterhouse Records in 2016. NonserviaM (2017) is; Leon (Vocals), Vinoth (All Guitars), ChuXian (Bass), and Faris (Keyboard).

What were you all up too prior to the band, was this always the chosen path or did you have other dreams and aspirations?

Well, like any regular working adults and salarymen, we all have day jobs. You know, the money is ‘basically’ important for our survival in this cold, harsh, pretentious world, but also very important for the well-being of the band. So ultimately, this conjectural ‘chosen path’ is pretty much our dreams and aspirations, if you will. :) Prior to NonserviaM, the members are associated with other Malaysian-based Metal acts respectively. Vinoth & ChuXian are the founding members of Penang Progressive Death Metal band CAKERAWALA, Faris is the brainchild behind Ipoh’s Progressive Groove Metal purveyors IN BELIEVER, and Leon is with Penang Death Metal act DISSECTOMY and Penang Thrashing Hardcore outfit WEOT SKAM.

Tell us about your latest release and why our readers should check it out.

Dissimilar to the band’s previous releases that were predominantly Melodic Death Metal churned, 2016’s “ARCHETYPE OBSCURE” (MCD) takes on a more profound approach to the band’s compositions; rigorously applying new elements like grooves, aggression, and technicality on the existing Melodic sound that NonserviaM is known by those who have been listening to us since 2012. If you’re looking for an Melodic Death Metal release that is injected with a lethal dose of old-school Death Metal grooves, searing guitar works, and atmospheric keyboard arrangements, “Archetype Obscure” would be the best bet.

Have you ever come face to face with someone within the music scene who has left you awestruck and why?

Two individuals to be precise. ASRAF, the guitarist of Malaysian Old School Death Metal masters, HUMILIATION, and GEA, guitarist of Malaysia’s pioneering Thrash Metal elites, ATHOTORGH. Not only these guys have achieved so much with their bands, they are some of the coolest, most humble human-beings we’ve had the pleasure knowing and hanging with.

If we were to head out to one of your live shows what can ourselves and others expect?

Six individuals on stage swirling up a colossal wave of raw Melodic Death Metal energy that goes on a head-on collision with a pillar of Death Metal aggression, generating a massive whirlpool of audible hate, despair, sufferance, and melancholia for our audiences to experience. If you had one artist/band that you could go on tour with tomorrow who would it be and why?

The mighty ROTTING CHRIST, hands down! Why? Well, we are named NonserviaM for a reason, maybe two…
