Californian Indie Punk Rock Band, Spanish Love Songs, released their latest EP last month; I’ve finally had the chance to catch up on it, listen to it multiple time and I’m so glad I did. The EP, released on Pure Noise Records in November, consists of 4 songs. All four of the songs are collaborations, with The Wonder Years, Kevin Devine, Tigers Jaw and Illuminati Hotties.
Three of the songs had been released before with the newest song on the EP being 'Lifers Too' featuring The Wonder Years. There isn’t a weak song on the EP, this is what a great EP should sound like, varied, full of quality and clearly exploring where they have been and where they are going. The band themselves are clear this is a snapshot of where they are now after a lot of touring but it also has one eye on the future, on where they might be going and there are strong hints of more to come, they are clearly building up to new music but whether that will be another EP or an album, is not clear.
The band themselves have always dealt in a mix of big themes, cultural reflections with a sense of dread hanging over their whole body of work. That approach continues on this EP, but it doesn’t just feel like a holding EP or a cheap cash in, it’s a lovely group of songs all of which deserved to be heard and cherished.
Personal favourite for me is 'Heavenhead' as I think the mix of vocals with the Illuminati Hotties works incredibly well but it’s not an easy call, this really is a very strong collection of songs.
If there is going to be a new album this is an excellent teaser, if there isn’t it stands as an EP in its own right.
If you don’t know Spanish Love Songs it’s time to discover them, they’ve toured Europe and the UK this last year and will be back I hope. This EP is an excellent introduction, but you also have a number of albums to explore, don’t wait, you will find something special.
