South Wales alt-rock quintet Strange Company have returned, armed with their dark, brooding new single "Do You Feel Numb?".
Out now on digital platforms everywhere, Do You Feel Numb? is a tale of the challenges of the mind, how it is not always easy to be the person you want to be, and that sometimes trying to avoid pain also comes with a heavy cost. Sonically, the main riff that repeats throughout is huge and all encompassing, and the vocal variety on show from frontman Matt Davies will appeal to a huge range of listeners. Do You Feel Numb? has been mixed and recorded by Timothy Vincent at Woodcroft Audio.
"Do You Feel Numb? is built around a line I still find hard to say out loud: "I'm scared I'm turning into everything I've been running from."
Spend long enough avoiding your fears and you end up giving them all your focus anyway. The person I want to become is scary too, because of everything I'd have to overcome to get there.
The song is also about chasing numbness like it's the finish line, only to get there and find nothing waiting for you. The pain stops, but so does everything else, and what's left just feels hollow.
DYFN? almost didn't survive. It started as an '80s pop-rock demo and got shelved, only getting a second chance when we all sat down together to make the decision to delete it forever but saw something special there. As we tore it apart and rebuilt it, our guitarist, Owen said something that stuck with me: the song doesn't belong to us, we're working in service of it. From there we dropped everything we thought we knew about the song and put weeks of work into writing it the way it deserved to be written. That's what it took to turn it into the punchy, bleakly honest emo rager it is today."
