Interview With 'The Radio Broadcast'

Firstly, introduce yourselves and tell us a little bit about the band and how you came to be?

Hello, we are The Radio Broadcast. We are a live Electronic group. There are two of us in the group. Michael plays keys and loops/samples and Kristin sings and plays keys as well. We met in a tattoo shop in 2005 and started playing music together in 2008 and formed TRB in 2009. Michael grew up playing drums in Punk bands and Kristin grew up playing the piano but at the time when the two met neither of them were involved in anything musically. We had both wanted to create our own Punk band but realised after purchasing a guitar neither of us knew how to play nor had the time or patience to learn so we stuck with what we knew, drums and keys. Over the years our sound and style has changed along with the overall setup of the equipment we use. Our style is always evolving

What were you all up too prior to the band, was this always the chosen path or did you have other dreams and aspirations?

Before The Radio Broadcast we would always go to shows together. Music is our passion. TRB wasnt anything we had ever imagined we would have created. It basically developed out of our love for music and wanting to be more than just spectators.

Tell us about your latest release and why our readers should check it out.

Our latest EP "ARRIVED" is something that our friends and fans have been asking about for a long time and something that we have been pushing for for a long time. This EP encapsulates several styles of Electronic music. A little bit of Synthwave and Synthpop mixed with some 8bit sounds into a little bit of gritty witch house and ending with a track that is a little more dub sounding.

Who would you say is the bands main song writer or is it a group effort and where do you draw your inspiration lyrically and musically from?

Lyrically that is all Kristin but musically it is a collective effort. We both have ideas that we are messing with individually then we present them to each other and then Kristin will add her influence to a track or Michael will add his. Also many times we create tracks together just messing around. Lyrically the inspiration comes from the feeling of the tone of the song, past experiences, movie titles, or just random words from conversation that happen to pop out. Musically the inspiration comes from the state of mind and the frequency which we are tuned into. We could be out in the back yard enjoying the sun and then you feel a beat and hear a rhythmic pattern. Often times we let YouTube play as we clean the house and then we will be tuned in to the frequencies of what we were listening to and we feel inspired to create something. There are times when we step into the studio with the desire to create but nothing constructive is developed because we are not tuned in to the correct frequency We aren't listening to whats out there. But not to say the time was lost.

As a band what do you believe is your greatest achievement to date and why?

We feel that our greatest achievement is the fact that we havent given up and we still enjoy what we are doing. For many Electronic artists it can be a challenge to continue on with there music due to the lack of support. We know of several Electronic musicians who have given up because they are not getting the opportunities, respect, acknowledgement, attention or pay that they expect to be given or that they see others rewarded with. The genere in which our music falls under can be very discouraging at times. You can get a great response online but then when it comes to a live performance there could be low crowd attendence. Nobody likes to play for bar staff and nobody enjoys an emotionless crowd. Not saying that is all the time but we are saying that it happens and can cause others to lose hope in their musical aspirations. We have had some low times and we have had some high times, so for us to being as well as we are doing today we feel it is a great achievement.

Have you ever come face to face with someone within the music scene who has left you awestruck and why?

Yes. Jeffree Star. We opened for him several years ago and it was a great time! His presence is overwhelming. He is very bold, focused, and strongly confident. We were very excited to meet him and when the time came we were like a deer in headlights.

What do you enjoy most about touring?

Touring is a lot of fun. It's an adventure. We really enjoy playing in new and different places. What we really like about touring is the experience meeting and seeing other artists in our genere and watching how they create their sound. They are so many styles and tools when it comes to Electronic music and there is not one correct way to create so it is very exciting and interesting to see what others people are using to create what they are doing. If we were to head out to one of your live shows what can ourselves and others expect?

You can expect to feel rewarded and fully entertained. With our music being very diverse there is something there for almost everybody. We are always told by fans and other musicians that it is really cool to see us create the tracks live right there in front of them. Something that a lot of other Electronic artists are not doing. The energy projecting from the stage will keep you moving the entire time. As soon as the bass drops TRB comes alive. Between Kristin's bouncing and crawling around on stage and Michael's non-stop flow of body rockin dance rhythms you will be sure to have a good time! Not only will our music and energy keep you entertained and dancing but our stage performance will as well. We understand that we are performers and there is more to performing than just the music. We have put some time and dedication into creating some pretty cool visuals from massive arrays of led lights and lasers to mesmerising graphics on led screens and a 3ft by 10ft led "TRB" marquee. We are constantly coming up with new ideas for stage setups.

If you had one artist/band that you could go on tour with tomorrow who would it be and why?

Crystal Castles. They are one of our top artists to watch and listen too. We have played a show with them once many years ago and it was life changing. We feel we would compliment each others sound and style nicely if we were to tour together. You can spend an hour with a musical icon living or dead, who would you pick, why and what would you speak about?

An icon be different from person to person but a musical icon to us is Patric Nissely of INNERPARTYSYSTEM. Oh Man! Again another life changing band we have seen numerous times and hung out with and we opened up with a DJ set for them once as well. This band is a huge inspiration to us. Obviously we would want to talk about music. In regards to equipment, lighting, creating, touring, the business, influences, and the ending of INNERPARTYSYSTEM. Anything and everything music.

And finally and most importantly is Die Hard a Christmas Movie?

No. We do not feel Die Hard is a Chistmas Movie. It may take place on Christmas Eve but the movie itself does not focus to much or revolve around the fact that its Christmas. It's a Bruce Willis Movie!

We just want to say thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.

Not a problem! We really enjoyed this. Thank You for the opportunity.
