Interview With 'Different Light'

Firstly, introduce yourself/yourselves and tell us a little bit about the band and how you came to be?

Different Light was formed in 1995 and we’ve had a number of different line-ups since then, the only ever present member being myself, Trevor Tabone. The current members are: Trevor Tabone (vocals, keyboards) Jirka Matousek (bass) Petr Matousek (drums) Petr Lux (guitars, backing vocals) and Petr Kania (live guitars). We’ve released 5 albums so far, ‘All About Yourself’ (1996), ‘A Kind Of Consolation’ (1999), ‘Icons That Weep’ (2009), ‘Il Suono della Luce’ (compilation 2014) and ‘The Burden Of Paradise’ (2016) The band originally started off in Malta (That’s where I’m from) and I reformed it when I moved to Prague, Czech Republic.

What were you all up too prior to the band, was this always the chosen path or did you have other dreams and aspirations?

As we’re only part-time musicians, we obviously all have full-time jobs in various spheres, I myself am a secondary school teacher My dream was always to become a professional musician/songwriter, it still is in fact!

Tell us about your latest Album and why our readers should check it out.

Our latest album ‘The Burden Of Paradise’ was released in February of last year and the response we’ve got has been pretty phenomenal to say the least. We knew we had produced a good album but the reaction to it has been much, much better than we expected. We’ve been featured in all the top lists of 2016 and reviews and feedback have been great. I won’t go into its merits here, it can be heard on our Youtube channel (see below) and I hope people can judge for themselves. It can also be heard on the top streaming sites and the actual album can be bought through us (www.differentlight.cz) or through other Prog Rock sites.

Have you ever come face to face with someone within the music scene who has left you awestruck and why?

I’ve met a few of my musical heroes but I was totally awestruck when I met Peter Gabriel a few years back. Why? It’s Peter Gabriel, original member of Genesis…..

If we were to head out to one of your live shows what can ourselves and others expect?

Power, emotion, great songs and musicianship, the perfect package

If you had one artist/band that you could go on tour with tomorrow who would it be and why?

I could pick quite a few bands, most of which would be unrealistic or even impossible, so I’ll go for Haken. I just love them!

You can spend an hour with a musical icon living or dead, who would you pick, why and what would you speak about?

Again, I could pick loads, if it had to be just one then I’d go for Geddy Lee from ‘Rush’. We’d speak about music in general and why he’s only made one solo album!

And finally and most importantly is Die Hard a Christmas Movie?

I know nothing about Die Hard except that Bruce Willis is in it, plus they’ve made a few sequels I think. Does it have tinsel and lights in it? If so then it is, merry xmas
