I had no idea who TheCityIsOurs was when I put this on, and therefore I had no expectations around what I was about to listen to. And that’s good, because as an album this one decides to bounce around styles a little – still the metalcore band that they have apparently always been, but just the difference between the all-screaming intensity of track one ('Shame') and the metal groove of track two ('In The Dark'), show that this is a band with range and a desire to simply make the best music that they can.
Their sound is huge, slick and exceedingly well produced, with every instrument given the space and chance to shine – and the dynamic range is very well handled.
The variety of songs really does drive home just how good this band are, as although they all share a common sound and style (as you’d expect from an album), at no point do they meld into each other. They are all different enough that they stand on their own, and each have their own high points. For me, 'Hot Mess' is one of the absolute highlights with it’s almost pop-like chorus and chanting “H-O-T-M-E-S-S” refrain, and 'Freak Like You' is an absolute banger and destined to go on my best of 2025 playlist!
'Psycho' is a weirdly bouncy track, which stayed in my head long after it had finished, and 'Can You Feel It' is a proper anthem that had me banging my head and yelling along with the chorus. In fact, the whole album had me banging my head throughout.
The album has weak points, sure, but none of them are objective weak points – most are just songs that I don’t prefer as much as others, but nothing on here is bad. This is a perfect album for a miserable January day (which is, as we all know, the longest month ever), as it will make you smile, make you scream and make you lose yourself in the music, which is all I need from an album!
