SPQR - 'No Brain, No Pain' EP Review

Tracklist:

1. Nuthin Gud

2. Just Sumfin

3. No Brain, No Pain

4. Loves Summer

I knew nothing about this band before reviewing this EP, coming to it completely fresh was an interesting experience.

I have no idea who SPQR’s influences are, it’s not totally obvious!

What I do know is they sound different, interesting and ultimately well worth listening to. This is music that challenges you, doesn’t give you an easy ride but is still totally worth listening to.

It took me by surprise, at times threw me completely but it never less than intrigued me and dragged me in.

Did it all work? I’m not 100% sure, I will need to listen to it a few more times, but what I do know is that I wanted to keep listening and was actually disappointed when I realised that the EP was over.

In an era of disposable music this band are trying to do something different. There is a great tradition in British music of pushing the boundaries, they are not just pushed here at times, they are actively smashed wide open.

Time to investigate their back catalogue, absolutely! Go listen to SPQR with an open an welcoming mind!
