Interview With 'Vanilla Sugar'

Firstly, introduce yourselves and tell us a little bit about the band and how you came to be?

I am JP Vanilla. I started this on a midi keyboard and an iMac! Vanilla Sugar is made of Alternative / Electronic music, a Pop vocal sensibility, with a Metal influence.

What were you all up too prior to the band, was this always the chosen path or did you have other dreams and aspirations?

I have been playing music since I was 4. My dad is a drummer and has also been in bands his whole life. It’s in the blood.

Tell us about your latest EP/Album and why our readers should check it out.

I am working on my debut album, called, “She”. I’m so excited. It’s been a long time in the making. It will be out Jan 2020. The music is a combination of high energy- dark and creepy synths topped with a floating, haunting vocal.

Who would you say is the bands main song writer or is it a group effort and where do you draw your inspiration lyrically and musically from?

It usually starts out with a synth melody. The drums and other instruments fill in from that. The last thing I add to a song are the vocals…Sometimes I’ll have cool vocal ideas in the car while driving. I’ll record that on my voice memos app and save it for when it comes time to find the right vocal melody for the track. I get a lot of my lyrical inspiration from life experiences, and musical inspiration from horror movie soundtracks.

As a band what do you believe is your greatest achievement to date and why?

My favorite moment was performing at Warped Tour in Anchorage, Alaska. It was so great being able to connect with fans. It was amazing seeing 1000 people soaking in the music.

Have you ever come face to face with someone within the music scene who has left you awestruck and why?

I was amazed by Downfall 2012 when I saw them live. Great show, with multiple instruments and high energy!

What do you enjoy most about touring?

I love being able to wake up in a new city every day. I enjoy meeting new fans and getting to hang out with them. I also looooove driving! My best friend is my tour mate, she runs lights, sound, and makes sure we get to the venue on time. It’s fun!

If we were to head out to one of your live shows what can ourselves and others expect?

People can expect an extremely high energy performance, with a light show to match. I am the kind of person who believes in putting on a full show for people; lights, music, stage props, the whole thing.

If you had one artist/band that you could go on tour with tomorrow who would it be and why?

I would love to be on a lineup with Billie Eilish. I feel like we would get along!

You can spend an hour with a musical icon living or dead, who would you pick, why and what would you speak about?

I would talk to Jimmy Urine from Mindless Self Indulgence. I would love to talk to him about his writing process.

And finally and most importantly is Die Hard a Christmas Movie?

Most definitely.

We just want to say thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.

Thank you for having me!
