The Sunday Sadness are on a mission, they have decided what music they want to make, stated their aims and have delivered everything they said they would.
Their stated aim is to make cinematic music in a format they call Dark Pop. To say they have delivered is an understatement. This is dark, brooding Pop music that somebody, somewhere will want to write a film that that utilises this bands talent.
Don’t expect to be cheered up by this band, you won’t be, its not happy music but it is challenging and does draw you in, once you’re in there is warmth at times but I honestly don’t think that’s what they want. I think they want us to think about their music and ourselves.
It's sweeping at times, at other times its intimate and engaging in unexpected ways. They clearly have a love for 80’s synths and a desire to take Pop in unexpected directions. If more bands were to set manifestos like this and delivered them in the way The Sunday Sadness have then the music world would be an even more wonderful place.
As a start, this is special, can they keep up theses standards? I have no idea, but I hope this is the beginning of the greatest film soundtrack never attached to a film.
