Interview With 'Degeneratum'

Firstly, introduce yourselves and tell us a little bit about the band and how you came to be?

Hey so I’m Anthony from Degeneratum, I’m one of two vocalists in the band. Degeneratum started as a concept when I was fresh out of highschool. Essentially I couldn't find a band that my songs would fit with so I started banking the best for later.

After my last band went on hiatus, I decided it was time to launch the project and started seeking out members I thought would gel well together and push hard enough to make a real go of it. Degeneratum is made up of all experienced players who’ve been in the South East Queensland scene for quite a while, mostly people I had been friends with previously and some I was lucky enough to be introduced to in the recruiting stage. I’ve struck absolute gold with the lineup we ended up as and I couldn't be happier with the path we're all on.

What were you all up too prior to the band, was this always the chosen path or did you have other dreams and aspirations?

So we were all previously in bands, studying and/or working full time. Generally speaking, making a career out of music has been the main goal/dream for us all and we think we're off to a good start.

Tell us about your latest EP and why our readers should check it out.

A few months back we released our debut EP, 'Circuits'. Some of the songs had been written years ago but were always intended for when we had this project on its feet. 'Circuits' is definitely an EP you want to check out, it has a range of styles, influences and emotions while maintaining a unique sounds of it’s own, and does it all a bit differently to the usual approach. If you like it heavy, aggressive and groovy then you will not be disappointed.

Have you ever come face to face with someone within the music scene who has left you awestruck and why?

That’s a hard one to answer, I’ve come across a huge amount of talent in the years I’ve been involved and a number of people I would rank as some of the best, in their craft, that Australia has to offer. As a particular stand out though, I’d have to say Brisbane vocalist, Shaun Coar. I first saw Shaun fronting the band Bound For Ruin a few years ago and his range of styles and accuracy in hitting each piece of his vocal performance, both clean and harsh, is astounding, it blew me away. On top of that he delivers an emotional performance with great interaction and most importantly he is a super down to earth, friendly guy. I would definitely recommend getting on board with anything his name is attached to.

If we were to head out to one of your live shows what can ourselves and others expect?

We deliver a high energy, high impact show. We don't mess around when it comes to throwing it at the audience and you can feel it when we do. Other than that, dark, groovy tunes and a heavy atmosphere mixed with a lot of beer.

If you had one artist/band that you could go on tour with tomorrow who would it be and why?

If I had to choose just one, it’d be Psycroptic, those guys are killing it and their live show is amazing, everything I’ve heard and seen so far has been another step in the right direction and I honestly think between the style Degeneratum offers and Psycroptic’s onslaught, it'd be an absolutely crushing show.

You can spend an hour with a musical icon living or dead, who would you pick, why and what would you speak about?

I would pick Chuck Schuldiner. I discovered that guy just too late to have a chance of seeing him live but everything he has created has been a massive inspiration for me. You can hear it in his interviews too, the guy was a philosopher and there’s a lot I’d like to pick his brain about, I think there's a lot I could learn from him.

And finally and most importantly is Die Hard a Christmas Movie?

Without a doubt, and to anyone who says otherwise – I 100% respect your right to be wrong.
