Interview With 'Molly Grue'

June 21, 2018

Firstly, introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about the project and how you came to be?

My name is Krista and I'm a singer/songwriter but I'm mainly active as a visual artist. I've named this project after a character from the 'Last Unicorn', which is a favorite movie of mine, based on the novel by Peter S. Beagle. The way this project came about was I had wanted to release all of my unfinished material before moving on from music. I have quite an eclectic song catalogue so I thought it would be cool to divide everything by genre and release it under separate project names. Molly Grue is the project under which I'll be releasing my softer material. It's a collection of light Alternative Rock/Roots music. Admittedly the vibe of the EP will be quite melancholy. I felt transforming my unpleasant emotions and experiences into music might give the negativity a greater purpose. Regardless of how it's received commercially it's definitely better out than in.

Was this always the chosen path or did you have other dreams and aspirations?

I presented with severe symptoms of mental illness in my teens so my capacity to pursue standard, steady employment has unfortunately been a bit of a challenge for me. Music was the main thing in my life, as I had started writing and recording quite young, so it was kind of the only thing I felt I had. When you're essentially told your brain is sick and you'll require a bunch of medications to be "normal", you really let go of a lot of dreams and aspirations because you no longer feel like you can trust yourself. All of my goals went from "when I grow up I want to be..." to just trying to successfully get through each day. I don't think it had to be that way, but I had limited support or guidance at the time.

Tell us about the first single release from your upcoming EP and why our readers should check it out.

I've just released a single called 'Anyway', and it's about the struggle people in abusive relationships go through while managing their emotional pain and how they kind of become an island. They isolate themselves as their self esteem dwindles. I tried to capture that with lyrics that are both from a storytelling perspective and one verse from the victims' perspective. The track has a video in production for it which will help explain the audio samples in the track a little better.

Have you ever come face to face with someone within the music scene who has >left you awestruck and why?

No, I don't really get awestruck. Musicians and artists are all the same to me, everyone's doing the same thing only some are better at it, or simply more fortunate. I only really get taken with people if I find them to be raw, honest and good-natured and that's regardless of success or talents.

If we were to head out to one of your live shows what can ourselves and others expect?

This is a pretty stripped down project so you could expect it would feel pretty intimate. At a larger venue I might aim to have a cello, and a small string section but more often than not, if I do book shows for Molly Grue, it'll just be myself, an acoustic guitar player and one of those creepy vintage cymbal monkeys. He's kind of a mascot/honorary percussionist for the band.

If you had one artist/band that you could go on tour with tomorrow who would it be and why?

A few acts come to mind but I think I'd like to tour with Jenn Grant. I enjoy her track 'I've Got Your Fire'. It would be really cool to go from painting while listening to the song to sharing a showcase with her.

And finally and most importantly is Die Hard a Christmas Movie?

Absolutely.
