Interview With 'Patient Sixty-Seven'

Firstly, introduce yourselves and tell us a little bit about the band and how you came to be?

Hi! My name’s Tom Kiely and I’m the vocalist for Patient Sixty-Seven out of Perth, Western Australia.

Hey, my name is Declan and I play guitar for the band Patient Sixty-Seven.

We were established about 3 years ago, I jumped on board after Tom, our vocalist, asked me to be part of the project. I had known Tom through school and I was very excited at the prospect of writing music together. The band started slow, with a strong focus on live performances initially as we wanted to get our name out there in the local scene. We progressed and slowly wrote new material and released an EP and a few singles and we feel like we have evolved so much as a band and we're really excited to show you what we've been working on.

What were you all up too prior to the band, was this always the chosen path or did you have other dreams and aspirations?

Tom: I did study and complete my degree a few years back so that was definitely something that took up a lot of my attention as the band was starting up in the early days. It’s always been about balance and music has been something that has held all of our interest for a long time. Unfortunately, it’s hard to do this full time so we all definitely have our own kind of career path’s we are looking to pursue while being heavily invested in our music.

Declan: I had been in a couple bands prior to being in this band so I feel like it was definitely something that I was aspiring to. I can't speak for everyone else, but I know the guys all have the burning passion for the music we play and it really does come out when we all get together and play our songs

Tell us about your latest EP and why our readers should check it out.

Tom: Our sophomore EP is on its way to being announced and released. I would encourage everyone to check it out because it’s something we’re really proud of – and I think the music reflects the honesty and effort we’ve put into it. If you’re into heavier music, I would definitely recommend having a listen! There are a lot of new elements to our music that weren’t there before and there’s definitely more of a focus on blurring the lines between our more melodic side and the heavier parts.

Declan: Our latest EP is a strong reflection on how we as a band have matured and grown with experience. This is a much more hard hitting, yet melodic experience. I find that each song will have something for everyone. We also have our new clean vocalist Rory in the mix which adds a lot of dynamics to our sound. I am extremely proud of this EP and I know people are going to enjoy it.

Have you ever come face to face with someone within the music scene who has left you awestruck and why?

Tom: I met Tom Delonge once and that was incredible. Otherwise I would have to say anytime a touring band rolls into Perth and you get the chance to just see them live, you just get a real appreciation for what these guys do and how hard they work.

Declan: Oh many... very hard to put a finger on one person as there are so many incredibly talented people out there who will lend you their time and share their experience/knowledge with you. I find at the end of the day a band who puts on a strong live performance will always leave me awestruck as I feel its the ultimate showcase of talent.

If we were to head out to one of your live shows what can ourselves and others expect?

Tom: We really try and encapsulate an energetic and honest performance. I guess it’s really also about having a good time, enjoying yourself on stage – so we try to let loose a little as well! I love that everyone in our band does play with a huge amount of energy so we’re constantly feeding off each other. Definitely we’re always trying to improve ourselves as a live band, thinking of ways we can bring the music home a little more. Whoever has come out to watch us can hopefully leave and remember something about our show, good or bad haha!

Declan: You could expect a lot of energy! We pride ourselves in our live performance so we really get into it and give it our all. Our songs are diverse so you get a bit of everything with us! From a catchy chorus to a bouncy breakdown. Like I said earlier I feel like we have a little bit of something for everyone in our songs.

If you had one artist/band that you could go on tour with tomorrow who would it be and why?

Tom: It can be hard getting out of our home state of WA! It’s one of the most isolated cities in the world, literally. SO I think just having the opportunity to tour with some of the countries more prominent alternative bands would be amazing.

Declan: Haha without consulting the guys I'm signing us up for something with Parkway Drive as they were one of my biggest inspirations growing up, thats for my inner fangirl though. Truthfully, we are happy with supporting any hardworking band and a tour to increase exposure of our music of any sort is welcomed.

You can spend an hour with a musical icon living or dead, who would you pick, why and what would you speak about?

Declan: Thats a tough one... surely for the novelty of it I would choose John Lennon just so I could shock him with our music haha. I'd also ask him to feature on our next track…

And finally and most importantly is Die Hard a Christmas Movie?

Tom: The debate is real, I’d have to say yes. It’s too associated with ‘nearly’ being a Christmas movie for it not to be!
