I like new music; I just want to get that out there. I like cutting edge stuff but to be fair it can sometimes be hard to listen to, at least until it becomes familiar. Sometimes I want to listen to sounds from my past, you know comfortable sounds, and something I don’t have to think to hard about, music I can space out to!
Claytoride fall in to the latter category, indeed on first listen I was humming away, focusing on something else, it was only when it had stopped I realised I had never heard it before. To my ear 'Worth Leaving' takes all the best bits from 90’s Indie (My music, yes I’m showing my age!), reminds me off Bloc Party at times (choppy guitars), Blur in others although they actually sound like neither. The bands press release likens the band to Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro and Placebo and if you are a fan of any of those then you will like this.
The fact that Claytoride have been around for a while, two albums and a previous EP, shines through in their ability to craft a fine tune. Whilst listening to this EP, for about the fifth time I am reminded of bands from back in the day such as Dinosaur Jr, Smashing Pumpkins, My Bloody Valentine, and Ride. Not that they sound remotely like any of these groups, it’s just the vibe of the music.
So, do I like 'Worth Leaving'?
Overall I do, I feel it loses its way in a couple of tracks but in general it’s a belter and all involved should be proud of what they created. I reckon Claytoride will stay firmly on my radar, in fact I think I might check out their back catalogue.
