Interview With 'The Hellfreaks'
Firstly, introduce yourself/yourselves and tell us a little bit about the band and how you came to be?
Hey there! Here is Sue, singer and founding member of the Hungarian band called The Hellfreaks and Gabi, the bass player. We’re a Punk Rock band and are pretty unique in our country. There are just very few bands who are into Rock music with a girl in the front, but definitely no Punk Rock bands with a female singer. What’s more, we have no Punk Rock bands who have been growing out of the underground, as we’ve done, and made it to be one of Hungary’s most touring bands abroad. The Hellfreaks was founded in 2009, so a pretty long time ago, and in our first years we were walking on another path, we were more into billy-influenced genre. But in these 9 years we’ve released 3 albums on German labels, had over 200 shows from small clubs to major festivals, made it also over the big pond for a tour in the USA. We love Punk, we love the spirit - but we’re not that typical kind of Punk band. You will never hear us say “ACAB” or “ all politicians must fall” - we shout out to use your head, to think, to ask, to be honest, to have the right questions and to act when it’s necessary, even if you stay all alone on the ground. Hungary is going through quite desperate times and it was a long time ago that the power of Punk Rock came directly from the ground we walk on. So we grabbed it.
What were you all up to prior to the band, was this always the chosen path or did you have other dreams and aspirations?
Sue: Everyone of us would have a different story to tell about this question. I came to music literally by accident. I was a professional gymnast, sport was my life, my goal, my everything - but unfortunately I just landed once wrong on my feet, which ended up in a spine operation in way too early years. So I had to recalculate my life and fill the gap that my sports career left behind. But I was always the type of person who needs a big dream to move on. Now that’s called music for now more than 10 years and I’m quite sure I will walk this road way longer.
Tell us about your latest Album and why our readers should check it out.
Sue: You should check it out, if you think that a girl isn’t made of porcelain and pink. If you miss the good old Brody Dalle times. You should check it out if you wanna see pieces of our soul. And you should check it out to see if Germany’s Underdog Fanzine was right - they called our album “the best Punk Rock album in the last 10 years.” You should check it if you miss the feeling of rebellion. If you think that riot should start in our heads and not with alcohol and drugs in our hands.
Have you ever come face to face with someone within the music scene who has left you awestruck and why?
Gabi: Hmmm. Let me think for a second… No. But there are so many idiots out there!
If we were to head out to one of your live shows what can we and others expect?
You can expect loud Rock music, sweat, headbanging, honesty and a show without even a little pause.
If you had one artist/band that you could go on tour with tomorrow who would it be and why?
Gabi: Zebrahead for sure because “we wanna party party!” :)
You can spend an hour with a musical icon living or dead, who would you pick, why and what would you speak about?
Sue: I would love to meet Marilyn Manson and Taylor Momsen from The Pretty Reckless . I love their music, but both of them are so much hidden behind their masks. I would love to know who they really are. If I could meet musicians from the other side, I would choose Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell and just ask them: Why?
And finally and most importantly is Die Hard a Christmas Movie?
