Interview With 'Tali Dennerstein'
Firstly, introduce yourself tell us a little bit about the band and how you came to be?
I'm Tali Dennerstein and I'm a solo artist from Hertfordshire in the UK. I'd say my style, is a cross between Gothic, Alternative Rock, Indie Pop and Folk Rock. I also like to experiment quite a bit with Ambient and Electronic sounds, which I might add to a song, to make it stand out. I started singing and writing songs when I was very young and I grew up listening to Heavy Rock. My biggest influences were Curve, Soundgarden, Type O Negative, Alice In Chains and Nick Drake. I love a lot of genres and bands but these bands, I really related to when I was growing up and they inspired me to want to create music that would help people, in the same way they helped me through many tough times.
What were you all up too prior to the band, was this always the chosen path or did you have other dreams and aspirations?
I worked as a receptionist and a retail sales person for many years but inbetween I would go to rehearsals, every weekend and I always knew from 5 years old, that I wanted to sing and write songs. It's always been my passion and I couldn't live without being able to do it. It's the only thing I ever really wanted to do in life.
Tell us about your latest EP and why our readers should check it out.
My latest EP is called "Live For Tomorrow" and it's a 7 track EP. The songs are a mix between Pop Rock, Folk Rock and Ambient tracks, with heartfelt lyrics about having hope for the future, finding inner strength and letting go of the past. The first song is called "Summertime" and it's a very upbeat Pop Rock song, with a feel good Summer vibe. It's about releasing and letting go of negative thoughts and instead embracing all of the small but meaningful and beautiful things that life has to offer, that we sometimes don't always see, when we're stuck in a cycle of depression. It's also about keeping hope alive and just trying to stay optomistic. The second song is called "Tonight" and it's a Folk Rock song. It's about a girl being led on a journey, to find herself and unknowingly being guided by invisible forces in the right direction who are watching over her and protecting her. It's lyrically written in a fairytale style. The third song is called "Live For Tomorrow" and the track is an Indie Pop song, about a relationship, that just isn't working out and it's about just accepting things and looking to the future and letting go of the past. The fourth track is called "Hurt". It's a slow Electronic Ambient song and the is about unintentionally hurting someone you love and feeling guilty about it and how you miss them after they've gone. The fifth track is called "See The Sun". This one is very 90's Brit Pop, in style and it's about closing the door to the past and looking forward towards a brighter future. The sixth song is called "Skyline" and is about being there for someone who's hurting and telling them you'll always be there for them. The final track is called "Far Away". That song is about imagining a better world, where hatred, greed and fear don't exist.
Have you ever come face to face with someone within the music scene who has left you awestruck and why?
I've not actually come face to face with someone but I was really awestruck when I saw "Rush" live on their 30th anniversary tour. They gave an amazing performance live and Neil Peart did a fourty five minute drum solo, where he kept throwing his drum stick in the air, at the same time. It was a very awesome show.
If we were to head out to one of your live shows what can ourselves and others expect?
I'm a perfectionist, so I tend to put a lot of effort into my live shows, so you could expect a very genuine and heartfelt performance and lots of catchy songs with great guitar riffs and melodies.
If you had one artist/band that you could go on tour with tomorrow who would it be and why?
I think it would have been Type O Negative because they were very down to earth and a very funny bunch of guys. I think humour on tour would make it an even better experience.
You can spend an hour with a musical icon living or dead, who would you pick, why and what would you speak about?
There are many but I'd have to say Nick Drake because he seemed like a really interesting character. I'd speak to him about his thoughts and also what inspired him to write his music
And finally and most importantly is Die Hard a Christmas Movie?
Hmmm not too sure... Bruce Willis in a vest, makes a strange looking Santa Claus, haha.
