Interview With 'Static Roots'
Firstly, introduce yourself/yourselves and tell us a little bit about the band and how you came to be?
The short version is… Three of us, Ryan, Emma and Chris were working together in the Hard Rock Cafe in Glasgow. Ryan and Emma eventually started jamming together as “Thundercock” back in 2014. Around christmas Chris said to Ryan that he wanted to start a band as well. Ten minutes later out of nowhere, Jack texted Chris asking if he was still playing because he wanted to get jamming again... It was amazing! The four of us went into the studio playing some covers to work out our sound, kind of messing around with stuff for a few weeks and eventually Gaz started working with us and he sang, so we brought him in and he was a perfect fit!
What were you all up too prior to the band, was this always the chosen path or did you have other dreams and aspirations?
It’s always been Music and Art related for us. Some of us studied it, but we’ve always wanted to make a lot of noise. Gaz aspires to be a waiter the rest of his life, music’s only a hobby… NAAAAHT!
Tell us about your latest EP and why our readers should check it out.
Our debut EP is punchy and exciting, like anyone would say! At this point we’ve been playing for two and a half years and have quite a few songs, so it was hard to decide what to put on it. We went for four songs that are slightly different in style, but all with the Static Roots grit.
Have you ever come face to face with someone within the music scene who has left you awestruck and why?
Pete Doherty hit Chris in the face with a can of Guinness at a BabyShambles gig, and it really fucking hurt if that counts?
If we were to head out to one of your live shows what can ourselves and others expect?
It gets loud, it gets moist (sorry), it gets dark, and there is most certainly dancing.
If you had one artist/band that you could go on tour with tomorrow who would it be and why?
Pixies would be a hoot. Or some cool ones like Dead Sara or All Them Witches. They’re bands we love and are incredible live. We could learn a lot from them all!
You can spend an hour with a musical icon living or dead, who would you pick, why and what would you speak about?
Anyone really in the 27 Club really, they were all amazing artists who lived very interesting lives, so there’d be so much to listen to.
And finally and most importantly is Die Hard a Christmas Movie? Yes. Absolutely and completely.
