Interview With 'Oceans'

Firstly, introduce yourselves and tell us a little bit about the band and how you came to be?

On guitars we have Conor Hyde and Tom Hollands and our lead singer is Zach Silver, then we have James Gillingham on drums and Jack Squire on bass who are both not present for this interview! Brighton's notorious party flat 'King's Mansions' played a crucial role in how we all met each other!

What were you all up too prior to the band, was this always the chosen path or did you have other dreams and aspirations?

Prior to discovering our huge passion for music, we were knocking around not knowing what it's all about and some of us were even under achieving in school so to answer your question: not much until our saving grace music came along!

Your latest single 'What You Did To Me' is out now what's the songs central theme and why should our readers check it out?

'What You Did To Me' is a personal written song, based around the idea of when you have a problem, or anxiety about a situation, you need to let it off your chest. It's the best thing you can do otherwise the problem can manifest into something worse and turn on you, as the music video portrays (which we are releasing alongside the song). 'What You Did To Me' is a relatively dark song about current problems within our society, however gives a positive energy, simulating the idea of pushing through and making the most of what you have. The song is also very melodic and full of catchy riffs... It's not one to be missed!

Who would you say is the bands main song writer or is it a group effort and where do you draw your inspiration lyrically and musically from?

Conor would usually come up with the initial draft and basis for the song and Tom has been doing this a lot more now as well. After we have this draft, we take it to Zach to sort out melodies and lyrics. This is easily accomplished since most of us live with each other! After that we take the track to James and Jack to structure it and finalise the track. Our lyrics are mostly based on personal things that are happening in Zach's life but we hope that the songs can be interpreted so the listener can find something relatable in the lyrics.

As a band what do you believe is your greatest achievement to date and why?

Distributing hundreds of physical EP's at our shows and playing the renowned 'Concorde 2' in Brighton!

Have you ever come face to face with someone within the music scene who has left you awestruck and why?

I had the pleasure of meeting Chad Smith and our brief dialog went like this:

Conor: Are the Red Hot Chilli Peppers looking for another guitarist? (hint)

Chad: Maybe... Have you got skills?

Conor: I'm alright... Have you got skills?

Chad: Nah! I'm shit!

What do you enjoy most about touring?

We all agreed the single best thing about touring is meeting so many new interesting people. We've made a lot of friends from our previous tours.

If we were to head out to one of your live shows what can ourselves and others expect?

Sweat and lots of our singer doing the running man and slut dropping, maybe some moshing and one of us pulling out our bassists guitar lead by accident mid song...

If you had one artist/band that you could go on tour with tomorrow who would it be and why?

Don Broco! They're charismatic, funny guys and touring with them would be an incredible experience! That is literally the dream! You can spend an hour with a musical icon living or dead, who would you pick, why and what would you speak about?

They say "you shouldn't meet your heroes" incase of disappointment so we'd play it safe and pick a guaranteed incredible character... Dave Grohl. I'd ask him what it must have been like transitioning from playing stadiums and headlining festivals in Nirvana to suddenly starting Foo Fighters and playing very low cap venues. Must have been weird!

And finally and most importantly is Die Hard a Christmas Movie?

Absolutely fucking not! Hopefully this home wrecking controversy will end here... We just want to say thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.

No thank you! Really appreciate you talking to us!
