Interview With 'We Fall Slowly'
Firstly, introduce yourselves and tell us a little bit about the band and how you came to be?
My name is Boye and I’m the singer of We Fall Slowly. We started about 3 to 4 years ago. At first Anton (Bass) and Maarten (guitar) got together and wanted to start a Shoegaze band. But apparently it turned out quite different when the rest of us joined.
What were you all up too prior to the band, was this always the chosen path or did you have other dreams and aspirations?
Some of us played together in past groups but never we played together in this line up. We were all pretty busy with our day jobs but I think we all felt a void of some sorts. So yeah I think everything we all have done this far have led up to We Fall Slowly.
Tell us about your latest EP and why our readers should check it out.
Well….you have to check it out because it’s the greatest record of all time. Just joking.
Well our first EP was released at the end of 2014 and we are now currently working on our new EP which we will release this year. In the time between we've already released several singles. A few weeks ago we released the leading single from our upcoming EP, called ‘The Change’. It is our first political kinda song, about a collapsing world and people that are fighting against each other. You can stream it on Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music or Youtube.
Who would you say is the bands main song writer or is it a group effort and where do you draw your inspiration lyrically and musically from?
I would say that Maarten is the main songwriter, he comes up with almost every new idea, after that it is a group effort. Lyrically I take inspiration from my own experiences from past and present. But more recently I am writing about stuff where 30 something people can relate to.
As a band what do you believe is your greatest achievement to date and why?
Our show at the Melkweg venue in Amsterdam, which is a great venue where some of our musical heroes played. Also playing the Freedom Festivals, which is a really big thing over here. The list goes on but we are more focused on the future thing to come.
Have you ever come face to face with someone within the music scene who has left you awestruck and why?
So many people who say they want to help out and arrange shows and do management kind of stuff to help us out. But at the end of the day they always bail on us. So we have become very carefull with those kind of offers.
What do you enjoy most about touring?
Doing live shows and seeing new places and faces, also the crappy food.
If we were to head out to one of your live shows what can ourselves and others expect?
You can expect a raw and energetic live show with a pinch of madness.
What is the most embarrassing thing thats happened to you at a show?
One time we played a venue with a scary low ceiling, so I was just giving all I had and made a jump and cut my hand open on the ceiling and blood was gutting out. Not the best end of a show, but quite a spectacle though.
If you had one artist/band that you could go on tour with tomorrow who would it be and why?
At the Drive-Inn. Why you ask me? Because they are f***ing awesome. They are a huge inspiration for me personally. The energy, the songs just the whole thing.
You can spend an hour with a musical icon living or dead, who would you pick, why and what would you speak about?
I think I would pick Jello Biafra. One of the most intellectual/smart people in Punk Rock ever. I think the conversation would quickly turn to politics. I still follow his ‘spoken words’ and what he has to say on his YouTube channel, also pretty funny though.
What comes next for the band?
Currently we are programming our new set, finetuning all the stuff. In the mean time we’ll be rehearsing for the upcoming tours and recordings. A busy time, but we all love that!
And finally and most importantly is Die Hard a Christmas Movie?
What? Are there people who don’t consider it a Christmas movie?
