Interview With 'Weslynn'
Firstly, introduce yourselves and tell us a little bit about the band and how you came to be?
Hey there! We are Jared Geyer (Vocals, Guitar, Keyboard) Greg Olin (Guitar) and Kevin Holmes (Drums). We have actually been best friends since high school, since we all grew up in the same part of town. Music was always a part of our friendship. It was just a matter of time before WESLYNN became a band.
What were you all up too prior to the band, was this always the chosen path or did you have other dreams and aspirations?
We have been playing music together in one way or another since we were about 16-17 years old. After years of trying a ton of different things, we decided to take it out for the world to hear and see. We can all agree that music was the only option for us. It has kept us close through everything we have collectively been through over the years.
Tell us about your latest EP and why our readers should check it out.
Our latest release “Black And Champagne” was a 2-year process for us. We really pushed ourselves as musicians, songwriters, and friends to make this EP the best it could be. A lot of personal tribulations occurred during this time which made the completion very special. Each song on the EP has a different meaning and sentiment to each of us. We are so proud of the final project.
Who would you say is the band’s main song writer or is it a group effort and where do you draw your inspiration lyrically and musically from?
Most of the material starts with Jared creating the structure of a song. He then brings it to Greg & Kevin to add some texture and take it to the next level. It’s a process that provides a lot of room for a song to grow and evolve.
As a band, what do you believe is your greatest achievement to date and why?
Collectively, we think that our greatest achievement has been being able to go to different cities, meeting fans and watching them sing lyrics back to us. It’s humbling to see complete strangers become attached to our music.
Have you ever come face to face with someone within the music scene who has left you awestruck and why?
We have been so honored to play with so many amazing bands on a local level, as well as playing with bigger acts, it never gets dull seeing other musicians rock out.
What do you enjoy most about touring?
For us, it’s being able to see entirely new places as best friends, trying new foods, and having awesome talks over a beer after the show.
If we were to head out to one of your live shows what can ourselves and others expect?
We always strive to incorporate new aspects into our live shows; whether it’s bringing some friends on stage who shred on a saxophone or a flute, or putting together a light show, or even playing our parts on different instruments. We love putting on a show that people will remember and cherish.
If you had one artist/band that you could go on tour with tomorrow who would it be and why?
We love the thought of being able to share a stage with The 1975. The live show that band puts on is something that we admire.
You can spend an hour with a musical icon living or dead, who would you pick, why and what would you speak about?
John Mayer. We have all been huge fans of his writing and music for years, but once he became a Snapchat legend, we realized how hilarious he is. We would love the opportunity to grab lunch with that man.
And finally and most importantly, is Die Hard a Christmas Movie?
Haha! We love this question. We actually had this discussion about 2 weeks ago, while on tour with our good friend David Dreas (who produced our debut EP in 2013). He is a strong advocate of Die Hard being considered a Christmas classic. After a heated debate on a tour bus on a snowy night somewhere in Utah, we can all agree that Die Hard may be the best Christmas movie of all time.
